Here in October, we are heading into Keats’ evocative “season of mists and mellow fruitfulness”. As Britain’s apples ripen to a rosy glow and remind us why British apples are the best in the world, there is another fruitful bounty ripe for the picking. Thousands of miles away, the women of North Jordan are harvesting the new season’s pomegranates.
This autumn, we’ve discovered a new women’s co-operative in Orjan, a small village nestling in the fertile hills of Alijoun. Without adding sugar, they sieve and simmer the glistening red seeds, reducing 18kg of fruit to produce one kilo of delicious, dark, rich pomegranate molasses. It has a texture from heaven, a little like orange juice with the bits left in. Arabica’s Pomegranate Molasses is a sweet yet tangy syrup. Unlike sugar cane molasses, it has a fruitiness that is perfect in sauces, marinades, jams, chutneys and other dishes, both sweet and savoury. You should also try our pomegranate balsamic vinegar, it’s a refreshing change from the classic grape version and adds a wonderful zest to warm autumn salads and sauces.
We should receive our new season Pomegranate molasses before the end of October. To reserve a bottle please email us at
